Birding Magee Marsh

But I have now visited Magee Marsh in autumn, or, technically, the very tail end of summer, but whatever the season might actually have been the birds were not in their breeding finery and they were heading south. I have never been on the boardwalk at Magee Marsh in spring. There were even wood-warblers!

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of March 2011)

See my watercolor of the male we saw at Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia here. This pair was our first of the year though they can be found in Philadelphia most winters. Ken Januski Mar 7th, 2011 at 9:17 am Appropriately enough(see Corey’s post of today) it is the Eastern Bluebird. And my first Killdeer of year!

I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites).
