Despite the Southern Boobook being one of the more common owls in Australia they are heard more often than they are seen. Barking Owls can be observed in Broome around town if you know where to look. We are unsure as to whether the pair of Southern Boobook are breeding or just roosting inside the hollow tree.

A juvenile, if I am correct – and a rather rare bird in Shanghai, this being rather at the southern end of the wintering breeding range. My possible birdwatching highlight this month was Short-eared Owl at Fengxian. Despite (or because of) its slightly anti-German tone, this owl video is worth seeing.

According to Wikipedia, “A l owl ife is a term for a person who is considered morally unacceptable by their community” The local Nanhui shrikes are well aware that the word “lowlife” has an owl hidden inside, and mark the appearance of owls in their territory with harsh protests. Not this one though.

Even a big trip to Canada, though it turned up many other delightful species ( Boreal Owl , anyone?) struck out on the “common feeder birds” But I’d never had much luck with irruptives in the east — no Common Redpolls , no Bohemian Waxwings , and my quest for a Pine Siskins was a Monty Python farce.
