Lakshmi rides an owl as her Vahana (a spirititual being or animal that transports a God) and the Spotted Owlet has been chosen to represent the family. Common throughout India with a range that covers much of South-east Asia, it can often be seen around habitation where it catches small rodents, insects and invertebrates.

This was only my second time ever to observe this subspecies (the first time was here as well), two other subspecies I have observed in India. These handsome finches breed in the far north of Europe and come here for the winter only. They may have been disturbed by the presence of hunters in the Danube backwaters.

Hornbills of Sabah

Basically, hornbills get paid by evolution to eat fruit, digest the fleshy parts, and regurgitate or defecate the rest – a means of seed transportation that is apparently quite attractive to many plants despite the yuck factor involved. One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars.
