In light of this horrible incident, is it right for the zoo to carry on a breeding program that subjects more animals to such unnatural lives? Many sanctuaries do not permit breeding. The zoo, surely, carries responsibility for deficiencies in its enclosure. Finally, what of the audience?

Whitebaters are a peculiar kiwi breed of fishermen that catch tiny migratory baitfish and then fry them up in a kind of pancake. Presumably birds account for an unknown percentage of the 59 thousand people hurt by animals who listed “other” (I mean, it isn’t like you could have many anaconda or gorilla accidents here).

They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds. Zoo patrons were shocked to see Barika, a western lowland gorilla, holding a knife and apparently pointing it at another primate in the enclosure. In April 2009, unseasonably cold weather froze two whopping crane eggs.

Carmine bee-eaters occur throughout most of Subsaharan Africa, and many populations migrate widely post breeding. After breeding they also disperse over the rainforests and savannas of West and Central Africa, where they hunt for aerial insects.

The Congo Basin is the only place to shelter all three subspecies of gorilla: the Western Lowland Gorilla, the Eastern Lowland Gorilla and the endangered Mountain Gorilla. Mammals include Western Lowland Gorilla, Forest Elephant and Forest Buffalo, and eleven diurnal primates.
