Since I wanted to buy some genuine tastes of Costa Rica, we continued to C.A.T.I.E. campus gardens – the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Centre, located 3 km east of the town of Turrialba. Young birds, at least in captivity, become mature after 5 years and start breeding after 6 or 7 years.

Threatened by loss of habitat both on breeding as well as wintering grounds, a few species have even become endangered or at least on a perilous track towards that worrisome designation.
