As I said last week , I’ve decided to try and knock off a few of the New Zealand endemics and specialities that I haven’t seen before over the coming year, and the first place that sprung to mind was pretty close, just across the Cook Strait in the Marlborough Sounds. I didn’t see one, probably.

Birders who have been to California might be familiar with the latter two, indeed we would be close to the Poor Knights Islands later in the day, the site of the only breeding colony of Buller’s Shearwaters in the whole world. The first to cruise past in a hurry were the stunning Cook’s Petrels.

The fish owl is an endangered species, and before Slaght’s work, very little was known about it, especially in Russia. (It “The Volkovs took their food seriously and once they began cooking were a near-unstoppable force” (chapter 13). He wanted to do research that would have a conservation impact.

Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season. However they will not and cannot breed, and once these individual’s natural lifespans are over, these bird populations will be lost forever.
