They are ridiculously unafraid of people there – so the cynic in me suspects that swan meat is not regarded as tasty by the Japanese (another explanation, that the Japanese just like animals too much, can presumably be discarded given the country’s very principled approach in insisting on the right to kill whales).

The trade in TCM {Traditional Chinese Medicine} products has also been growing at an annual rate of 10 percent, which has seriously impacted medicinal plant and animal populations, though more than half of plants and animals being used by TCM are from artificial propagation or captive breeding.

T he Blue-throated Barbet (Xishuangbanna and Baihualing, Yunnan, China) is probably the barbet species that is the easiest to see in Southern China. Plus at my age, I should really like somewhat different music. Probably jazz. Highly recommended, as is some of the music of Joe Pernice (e.g., Pernice Brothers).

People apparently catch and eat Yellow-breasted Buntings because they think its meat has aphrodisiac properties ( source ), which leads to it being categorized as Critically Endangered. They are also raised commercially for meat and eggs, as described in that beacon of ornithological knowledge, the World’s Poultry Science Journal.
