The Humane Society has another great investigation into the shady practices of a corporate giant. It has about 140 stores nationwide that sell puppies that supposedly come from "good" breeders (are any breeders good? Not so, says the Humane Society. This news story slipped by in November.

The Humane Society and other groups oppose it as a power grab by big agriculture to prevent another Proposition 2 (the initiative passed last year in California to improve standards for farm animal care.) Would such a bill lead to jurisdiction over puppy mill breeders as well? There may also be unintended consequences.

Shift-It Tip: If you’re set on a purebred dog or cat, buy one from a rescue association instead of getting a pedigree from a breeder.
