As part of the Wildlife Conservation Society Birds of Brazil giveaway we asked readers of 10,000 Birds to name the bird in Brazil that they would like to see more than any other species. To see this bird in all its glory in the environs of Brazil would be my bird dream. It is a really neat bird that I have not seen before.

A passion for one bird family is also very useful. Like all talented travel writers, Dunn is adept at drawing us into his experiences.

There are many more factors than I imagined: compass errors, wind drift, overshooting, extreme weather and irruptions, natural dispersal, and human-driven vagrancy. Some birders may want to carefully read the chapter on human-driven vagrancy, which takes up the question of ship-assisted vagrancy. Next time, I’ll know why.
