Many years ago I interviewed Barbara Young, then the newly recruited chief executive of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), for an article for The Daily Telegraph. In the late 80s I was invited by Zeiss to go to Wetzlar in Germany to see the company’s binoculars being manufactured, an invitation that was too good to refuse.
