Many years ago I interviewed Barbara Young, then the newly recruited chief executive of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), for an article for The Daily Telegraph. In the late 80s I was invited by Zeiss to go to Wetzlar in Germany to see the company’s binoculars being manufactured, an invitation that was too good to refuse.

For example, researchers fenced in part of the nesting area of Northern Lapwings , thus excluding ground predators from some nests.

Following passage of the United States Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966, the California Condor ( Gymnogyps californianus ) was among the first 75 species listed for protection, the so-called “Class of 1967”. Part of its obscurity is due to the fiercely protective relationship Cologne has with its beer.
