This year it was an American Crow ( Corvus brachyrhyncus ), though at home in Albany, New York, it’s just as likely to be – and has been in the past – a Fish Crow ( Corvus ossifragus ). “I’m fly like an eagle and I drink Old Crow.” Well, it’s happened again – my first bird of the year was a crow.

One of my early memories of birds is the abundance of Ospreys I saw after moving from Syracuse, New York downstate to eastern Long Island at the age of eight. I know that Ospreys nest in upstate central New York, but if I saw them there as a child, I don’t recall it (though my father will probably remind me that we did).

The new series was masterminded by Chanticleer founder Paul Steiner, who was lauded on his death 19 years later for his “brilliant idea of creating bird guides with photographs” and organizing them visually. Bald Eagle, for example, is still said to be “formerly more widespread” though the range map shows expansion.
