You may have read my recent piece on Birding the Okavango Delta in Botswana here on 10,000 Birds. The Okavango Delta of Botswana, however, provides one of the very best opportunities to catch a glimpse. Typically these birds hunt at night and are very shy. Our trip to Botswana produced some great owl species besides the reclusive phantom, including some of the smallest and some of the largest owls in Africa. What a beauty!

Originally a hunting term, the Big Five were the most dangerous and prized targets of the great white hunters on safari. Prime destinations for seeing African Elephant in the wild include Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Uganda. to the far reaches of freezing Siberia.

We are currently filming in Botswana. What this land-locked country lacks in endemic birds it more than makes up for in accessibility of tough species, numbers of birds and the overall wildlife experience. Few countries can boast the megafaunal diversity of the Okavango Delta.

It is quite a sight to experience hundreds of Abdim’s Stork dropping out of the skies from seemingly thin air, to gorge on burnt or fleeing insects and rodents. It should sensibly occur in the vast Okavango Swamps of Botswana, but all records from this region have been discarded.

She talked about what we might see after we remounted the safari truck, which we had just driven out of the campground at the southern end of Kgalgadi Transfrontier Park, where we were staying in the South African camp, just across from the Botswana camp. That was one of his cats. He also had tigers, cougars, and some other animals.
