I wrote about it for WildBird Magazine a few years ago and recently David Sibley tackled it in his blog. Once you get them, they can be very loyal tenants but I always dreaded someone with very little bird knowledge coming in to purchase a Purple Martin house. It’s been brewing on birding listservs for years.

But for those of us in the Americas, the cup runs over with species of Troglodytes. Particularly in the Neotropics where wrens reach their biodiverse zenith with species of varying shades and patterns of brown, gray, and cream , and all with impressive, elaborate, voices and varying attitudes about revealing themselves for desired looks.

The Fairy Pitta is listed as Vulnerable, with the HBW that the species is “rare; global population probably no more than a few thousand individuals” While the sexes are alike, my guess is that the Fairy Pitta in the photo is a male given its early arrival date in Shanghai. But at least for this season, the chicks should be ok.
