A boat ride into this swamp turns up usual suspects like Pied Water Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird , but also (and most excitingly) three species of kingfisher: Green, American Pygmy and Ringed Kingfisher. Although not at peak migration season, we still scoped this location in the event there was anything present.

The capital is San Juan, an important center of Caribbean culture and transportation. And one can go birding on federal lands ( e.g., Cabo Rojo NWR ) and see ESA-listed endemic birds ( e.g., Yellow-shouldered Blackbird ), but not be in the ABA Area. Puerto Rico became a territory in 1898 and a commonwealth in 1952. Pierre et Miquelon.

The Bird Watching Society meets just about every weekend, so birders should check their activities calendar for scheduled events. And even though transportation is so easy and inexpensive, prepare to walk a lot. While I only dedicated part of my time to scheduled birding events, I always had my bins handy. Said thrush.
