Clearing up the Collared Kingfishers

All the way back in 2011 I wrote about the confusing taxanomic enigma that is the Collared Kingfisher , a species that ranges from the Red Sea to Tonga in a bewildering variety of forms. I’m happy to report that an analysis of the species and some relatives has found that, as suspected, it isn’t a single species.

It feels like spring….

…so here’s a post about some birds at a spring. The spring the birds I’ll show you today is far from the seat of New Zealand’s government where I now work. It’s actually found in a wadi in the United Arab Emirates, in the mountains between Dubai and the Gulf of Oman. I’m sorry.

I managed to actually beat my year list total, as accounted by eBird, by one bird. I saw Painted Wolves again, my favourite species ever. I also managed to go to 10 different countries, so rather than arbitrarily pick my top 10 birds of the year, I’ll arbitrarily pick a top bird from each country. I bought a house.

26 Hours in Dubai

The travel agent mentioned I had a 2 hour layover in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. I was flying Emirates and that was the hub. But I figured there had to be some birds there. So there would be some birding. The location was a good spot to see Arabian Oryx, a species I hoped to see but didn’t.

Confusing Collared Kingfishers

The world of birding is filled with challenging groups well known to all, birds like gulls , Empidonax flycatchers or cisticolas that require attention to the tiniest details in order to assign an individual to a specific species (if it can be done at all). One such bird is the Collared Kingfisher ( Todiramphus chloris ).
