It’s actually found in a wadi in the United Arab Emirates, in the mountains between Dubai and the Gulf of Oman. The species used to be lumped with the commensal House Bunting, but the two are now treated as separate species. Birds buntings spring United Arab Emirates…so here’s a post about some birds at a spring. Okay, that’s a fairly weak way to start a post. I’m sorry.

The travel agent mentioned I had a 2 hour layover in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. I was flying Emirates and that was the hub. The location was a good spot to see Arabian Oryx, a species I hoped to see but didn’t. All the way back in 2011 I wrote about the confusing taxanomic enigma that is the Collared Kingfisher , a species that ranges from the Red Sea to Tonga in a bewildering variety of forms. I’m happy to report that an analysis of the species and some relatives has found that, as suspected, it isn’t a single species. As you can see though, there remains some variation even in the species that remain. Subspecies kalbansis, United Arab Emirates.

I saw Painted Wolves again, my favourite species ever. The Orange-fronted Parakeet is a critically endangered species that I came agonisingly close to seeing but didn’t. Singapore is a densely populated city-state which still manages to protect a number of species. One of the coolest of these urban species, no matter how many times I see them, is the Oriental Pied Hornbill. United Arab Emirates: No Bird Award.

The world of birding is filled with challenging groups well known to all, birds like gulls , Empidonax flycatchers or cisticolas that require attention to the tiniest details in order to assign an individual to a specific species (if it can be done at all). Across their range there are a large number of subspecies, 49 according to the Handbook of the Birds of the World, but as we shall see there is some disagreement about both subspecies and species limits.

9 beats shared 100 checklists from 8 countries (Costa Rica, USA, UK, Brazil, Serbia, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Australia. They noted 598 species as a team, bringing the year total to 2118 and pushing the life list to 3555. Theodore Roosevelt National Park – South Unit. The nights are drawing in and the mornings are cooler and noticeably damper. It’s September and time for birds to start their southerly journeys.
