Birds at Tanner’s Spring, Central Park, Manhattan

Hidden away on the west side of Central Park, easily accessed from the 81st Street entrance by the American Museum of Natural History, and adjacent to the Diana Ross playground is a marvelous bird magnet. Nashville Warbler Vermivora ruficapilla. Anywhere you can see a Bay-breasted Warbler below eye level is a great birding location!

Light Warbler Action in Central Park

It had been a long time since I birded Central Park. It had been a long time since I’d seen any warblers besides Yellow and Nashville ; it had been a long time since I’d seen any Northern Cardinals or Blue Jays , period. Oh, and there was one other birdy thing that happened in New York City.

Hark, a Lark (Sparrow)! Make That Two!

Kissena Corridor Park underwent habitat restoration over the last two years which seemed to consist of the New York City Parks Department ripping everything out except some native trees and plants, planting saplings, and regularly applying herbicides to areas where invasive plants tried to take over the park.

The Wood-Warblers Are Back In New York City!

Reports abounded of a huge variety of birds, from thrushes to nightjars, terns to vireos. Despite the amount of time spent birding I did not neglect my family at all, enjoying an outing to the Bronx Zoo on Saturday afternoon and a hike at Doodletown Road in Bear Mountain State Park on Sunday. And, of course, the wood-warblers.

The Waterhole at Forest Park: The Best Place in New York City to See Wood-Warblers

On a recent afternoon’s visit to Forest Park’s famed waterhole the birds were coming in frequently and in abundance. Unfortunately, this has been a very dry spring in New York City so, as you can see in the photos above, intrepid Queens birders have made makeshift bird baths to take the place of what is normally a vernal pool.
