The Black-tailed Deer , or, in this case, the Columbian Black-tailed Deer , is not a full species, but one of two black-tailed subspecies of Mule Deer.* It is found from northern California to British Columbia though it formerly ranged must further east before it was hunted out of its eastern haunts.

The combination of over hunting, and the native animals susceptibility to diseases carried by domestic livestock that were allowed to graze there, completely eliminated these Bighorns by 1915. These younger rams were having a great time playing “king of the rock” So much for the history of the area, lets talk about the birds!

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. There are also rattlesnakes, amazing views, fascinating tales of history and prehistory, and of course, many birds. It’s hard to say.
