Birding in Florida is unique in that so much of that state’s plenty is evident even to the casual observer. There are few places in the United States where simply driving around can leave you with a list of 30+ species, many of them large and spectacular. There were three burrows, each with a tenant.

There are few birds in the sprawl of suburbia or the sylvan ideal of semi-rural existence as appreciated as wrens. The name wren first entered language to refer to that bouncy bird we now call the Eurasian Wren in the 8th Century as the Old English wraenna. like a snake through grass. The Fairy Pitta is listed as Vulnerable, with the HBW that the species is “rare; global population probably no more than a few thousand individuals” While the sexes are alike, my guess is that the Fairy Pitta in the photo is a male given its early arrival date in Shanghai.
