Given that according to the HBW, the species prefers dense primary and secondary montane forests, the note that the bird also forages among kitchen waste (in the same HBW entry) seems somewhat incongruous. Wikipedia reports that he “was an excellent tennis player and an enthusiastic big game hunter. ” ( source ).

Environmental groups have called on Obama to get rid of the USDA's Dept. Animals killed also include threatened and endangered species, a number which has steadily increased since 2005. This amount is considerably less than the number of animals taken by hunters and trappers annually. Ranchers oppose the move.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.

This is quite a big deal for an island group that had no mammals save bats for millions of years. The initial solution in New Zealand was to move species to islands where mammals hadn’t reached. So New Zealand began the process of clearing islands of mammals, using poison, trapping and shooting.

…Sure, we got lots of ‘em javelina and wild hogs too” But I explained to him that I was a hunter of a different kind and that I was looking for tiny owls and not wild pigs. I went on to tell him that I’d seen these birds in Central America but that I needed to see them in the US too.
