Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Bluebirds Fly

Well, it is nesting season and being a nest box monitor with three Bluebird Trails, I thought I should rectify the blatant lack of coverage on 10000 Birds of one of the most iconic North American birds of our time. The female alone incubates the usual 4 to 6 eggs for about two weeks beginning the day the last egg is laid.

Birding Shanghai in December 2022

This year, it seems I wrote one post on birding in Shanghai each month – and I am still not even sure anyone is interested in these. Probably the most interesting bird this month was a Grey-headed Canary-Flycatcher showing up in the Shanghai Botanical Garden. I know – sexism is very common in the birding world.

The name is a puzzle though – even the HBW states that the bird has “small or no crest” These photos were taken on Sep 26, indicating that the birds passed Shanghai rather late (according to the HBW, “autumn migration from early to late Sept”). According to a local African superstition that I just made up, it is not harmful to eat toxically colored birds if you eat them in the dark. Colonial history reflected in bird names. Unfortunately, the Fork-tailed Drongo is not the honest and god-fearing bird one could wish for. She also laid eggs in Melba Finch nests.
