And if you like birding, it’s a good place to spend time before or after meetings and explore. Late autumn 2022, I decided flying in a day early to do some weekend birding. It was David’s first time birding. Now it was a bit lighter, diurnal birds became vocal. A weekday would be better for timid birds.

With the proliferation of those erstwhile invaders, House Sparrow , European Starling , and Rock Pigeon , there a lot of homogeneity among these species, which is a shame because what parking lot birds generally lack in beauty they more than make up for in charisma. Though, admittedly, Clark’s Nutcracker would be alright too.

For a couple of years now, I have been chasing a bogey bird whenever I visit Dubai. The Arabian Babbler is a reasonably common bird with a preference for arid, scrubby areas. House Sparrow, Eurasian Collared Dove and Laughing Dove are abundant and vie to distract the eye at every turn.

Although the two activities seem mutually exclusive at first glance, shopping mall parking lots and the edge habitats that surround them can be ideal for incidental birding in the holiday season or even any season. In southeastern Florida, most of the bird species restricted to parking lots and similar artificial habitats are exotic species.
