Serbia self-drive birding tour planning

This October, a previously unknown name shined in the eBird alerts in Serbia: Raphael Nussbaumer. He made a whirlwind tour of some of the best birding areas in the country, from the Karajukica Bunari peat bog in the extreme southwest (by the border with Montenegro) all the way to the Slano Kopovo Crane Sanctuary in the northeast.

Birding Deliblato Sands: What I have seen and what I haven’t

Turning off the asphalt, I enter the Deliblato Sands steppe, between the Danube and the Carpathian Mountains in the northeast of Serbia, where the first bird to greet me is a Northern Wheatear , followed by a Crested Lark. They are quite a rare breeding species in Serbia, declining as we speak, but one pair breeds nearby.

Perhaps in my December posts on birding Colombian Amazonia ? Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm.

Computer-modelled Range Maps

During the final stages of the Pan-European bird-atlassing work last year, computer models of Serbian ranges for some 150 bird species were produced for the first time ever. Some bias was created because of large data set from Belgrade and environs where the majority of active eBirders live (I am not an eBird user – I am an eBirder).

Rosefinches, Griffons and Woodcocks

Zlatar in western Serbia, heading towards the town of Sjenica and, behind it, the bridge on the River Vapa. Are we going to bird in the fog? But I cannot notice the breeder #2! Scanning carefully, small birds occasionally fly from one tree to the other, but I cannot discover them in the foliage! Still, we are lucky.

Flying Lemons Everywhere

It has been a while since I birded a new area for the first time – I sure missed the feeling. Paljuvi Dam, some 30 miles SW of Belgrade, Serbia, is a known angling, but not so well known birding destination. Or are these birds taking a year off to see the world? As a result, I had 15 species in the first hour.
