Last week I wrote about the interesting hunting habits of our local Harris’s Hawks. Given the scavenger feeding habits of the Turkey Vultures , the small mammals and birds that are on the menu for the Zone-tailed hawks are lulled into complacency by the lack of threat from the vultures.

One of the most majestic macaws is the Hyacinth Macaw ( Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus ), a brilliant blue South American bird that weighs in as the largest flying parrot in the world. The Hyacinth Macaw is more than just another pretty face; these birds are social with strong family values. These macaws nest in existing holes in trees.

I went on to tell him that I’d seen these birds in Central America but that I needed to see them in the US too. This comment spurred the manager into realizing that I was a freak and part of the birding crew he was expecting. He told me that he had never seen the little owls that I was referring to.
