Our 5th wheel and truck are parked in just about as close to the middle of this central Oregon refuge as possible. By the time we left, I had recorded one new Lifer, 12 New Year Birds, and a total of 76 species. In addition to the birds, we saw Mule Deer, Beaver, Muskrat , and Mink. US species – 175.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The Louisiana black bear’s threatened status warrants protection under sections 7 and 9 of the Endangered Species Act. This is an Urban Refuge !

Following passage of the United States Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966, the California Condor ( Gymnogyps californianus ) was among the first 75 species listed for protection, the so-called “Class of 1967”. It’s easy for West Coast birders to covet the variety of wood-warblers back east, while eastern birders may lament the dearth of hummingbird species on their side of the continent. Of course, reading field guides breeds jealousy. The envy goes both ways. “How come they get gulls that aren’t mostly hybrids?”
