But sometimes the stars align perfectly, as they did a couple weeks ago, in the form of North Carolina’s first record of Townsend’s Solitaire. The species has been on my personal radar for North Carolina for years. And it just so happened that the solitaire had set up shop right under the swinging bridge.

Sure, you can find it across much of the eastern United States, even as far north as southern Canada but I ask you, are you really seeing a Prothonotary Warbler if you’re not watching it pick through a flooded forest in the south? Now back to all the transient species that I can’t bear missing. Appropriate!
