This is very bad news for a group that is largely nocturnal and has adapted to a secretive lifestyle, and is thus best detected by its tracks and signs. This small pine tree was very recently demolished by a brown bear. The claw marks on this brown bear’s footprint make you wish you had taken the other kind of canon with you.

It prompted a lot of questions, many of which I had previously answered by simple supposition and presumption, but which now became highlighted as inadequate in the light of this experience. I changed to a position further up the slope which allowed me to get a better angle on the top of the branch and bear out my supposition.
