It was also great to finally travel overseas again, meet a lot of people I did not know (and some I did), to be in a new country… and not just the new country, but its best birding area, where almost all local hotspots are yellow (150+ species) and several are ochre (200+ sp.), impressive for Central Europe.

Hurricane Irene Birding Wrap-Up

The storm surge at The Battery on the southern shore of Manhattan reached 4.0 the rescued White-tailed Tropicbird from Rensselaer County South Polar Skua was another species that didn’t always weather the storm well. The other Oceanodroma species spotted was Band-rumped Storm-petrel. That is absolutely nuts.

If the birds were Germans, Siberian Rubythroats wintering in Xishuangbanna (where I saw them a few years ago) would certainly be described as “Warmduscher” by their fellow species members seen in Shanghai this month. One of the alleged proofs is that these drones often land on power lines to recharge their batteries.
