They are traditionally pastoral people, but have from necessity accepted agriculture, fishing and crocodile hunting as means of survival.

This fish hunting duck ranges from the northern tip of New Zealand to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands (after which it was first named) but is common nowhere. Nor is the sight of the Greater Short-tailed Bat , which can still fly but instead chooses to scurry across the forest floor in the manner of a shrew.
