That is a big difference compared to the 2,000+ singing males detected in 2012, well above the recovery goal for this species set by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Not only were they a common bird, they were a common bird nearshore; indigenous peoples hunted them up and down the coast. That would have been awful.
