When we returned to Tucson, from the Bahamas, I was approaching a milestone number, 1300 bird species, and drove myself hard, climbing, hiking, searching, and driving all over the state of Arizona looking for those last eight birds. With four days to go in 2018, why not try for a few more, right? Bahamas Totals: 58.

Last year it was New Providence in the Bahamas. We got off the ferry and, seeing as we only had about half-an-hour to drive before we were at our hotel, we decided to explore a bit at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Upside-down, right side up, it doesn’t matter to Brown-headed Nuthatches.

Navarro’s exceptional drawings illustrate the species accounts. Forty-eight species.

And, while friends have told that me that I can go to the Bahamas and easily see the warbler in January, it turns out that is not true, the bird is elusive in its winter habitat as well (which is not Jack Pine, by the way). Fish and Wildlife Service endangered species list.

In particular the South Island destination of Kaikoura is world-renowned for the flocks of albatrosses and giant petrels floating right off the pelagic boat, and the ease of the trip makes it a must-visit for any visiting birder. The final large petrel species is another gadfly petrel, albeit a much larger one than the Cook’s Petrel.

So right now I’m feeling pretty good about Eurasian Collared-doves. A Eurasian Collared-dove photographed by Mike in the Bahamas , which is pretty different from midwinter Montana Eurasian Collared-doves, as you may have gathered from the name, are not part of our native avifauna. There are are presently thought to be five species of kiwi with a possible sixth extinct species, all of which have suffered varying degrees of range contraction since the arrival of humans. Both these tours are for the Little Spotted Kiwi , the smallest species and one now one mainly confined to offshore islands. Wicked, right?
