Scanning the skies for Zone-tailed hawks

Zone-tailed Hawks can be found in the extreme lower parts of the US, in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, with an estimated population of 450-650 birds. There is a small population in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. Their territory also includes portions of Central America, down into eastern Columbia, Ecuador and Peru.

Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls

These wily and diminutive owls occur from Bolivia and Argentina northward through Central America (check out this post on Pico Bonito ) and only just occur in the United States in Arizona and south Texas. The Arizona birds are from the cactorum race and these birds are often referred to as the Cactus Ferruginous Pygmy Owl.
