The only thing that could have made the experience with Tryngites subruficollis better would have been some sunlight. Here’s hoping that the five individuals I spotted are all getting as at as the one above and that they safely make it back to Argentina for the winter and then back up north to breed. What great little birds!

Invercargill The bottom of New Zealand and you’d be forgiven for thinking the end of the world is where you’ll be heading if you’re following Argentina, Scotland, Romania or Georgia. A good place to see the enigmatic Kokako. Also within reach are the greatest surviving expanses of kauri forests.

A big moon gives enough light for the gulls to hunt by, so the shearwaters seldom come onto land while the full moon is up. It usually waits for a few days before taking the metaphorical plunge, but once it leaves the burrow and flies for the first time, it will not stop until it reaches the waters off Brazil and Argentina.
