A good place to see the enigmatic Kokako. If you can prise yourself away from the spas be sure to head for the Kiwi Encounter Centre.

After mating, a single egg is laid and incubation duties are shared by both parents. It usually waits for a few days before taking the metaphorical plunge, but once it leaves the burrow and flies for the first time, it will not stop until it reaches the waters off Brazil and Argentina.

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding.
