I believe that great apes do have that capacity. Heck, even my cats visibly missed old Charlotte who died last August. A couple of studies imply that chimpanzees may mourn their dead. I believe they do. I've read of the mountain gorillas in Virunga grieving over the loss of a silverback.

Last year, beginning about Halloween, thousands of juvenile auklets started washing ashore dead from California’s Farallon Islands to Haida Gwaii (also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) off central British Columbia. That means crows join humans, apes and monkeys in exhibiting advanced relational thinking, according to the research.
