That’s right, there is another Beat Writer at 10,000 Birds! He attended Iowa State University where he earned his B.S. in Animal Ecology. One of his most memorable birding experiences was the six months spent in Northeast Brazil performing research on a new species of bird called the Araripe Manakin.

To the Editor: Re “An Ape Types in Iowa” (column, Aug. 9): Gail Collins writes: “Human-ape conversation was a very hot topic back in the late 1960s, when researchers first taught a chimpanzee named Washoe to use sign language. The Great Ape Trust is the only place in America where this kind of research still goes on.”

That’s right, the overwhelming benefits to the environment and the economy are generated by non-consumptive uses of the refuges like wildlife photography, environmental education, wildlife observation and interpretation, not hunting and fishing. The refuge is designated as a Globally Important Bird Area (IBA) 4.
