There is even a new species of tortoise that was announced as the book was going to press, although it’s been identified from fossil remains and is apparently no longer with us. They complement Kricher’s text., Where once there were 13 species of “Darwin’s finches,” there are now 17.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). to the far reaches of freezing Siberia.

None fly, most are curious and social, which probably contributes to our cultural perception of penguins as one step away from human. They are software mascots, cartoon characters, animated film dancers, children’s book heroes, zoo celebrities, and documentary film stars. Some are cute, some are dignified (and royal!).
