Birding Santa Cruz Island

Peregrine Falcons breed on the sheer cliff faces of Santa Cruz; you may meet one at eye level on the bluff trail north of Scorpion Ranch, where this photo was taken (I highly recommend this trail, by the way, if only for the views). In summer and fall, the waters around the Channel Islands can teem with Blue Whales.

The site serves as a breeding centre for endangered birds and animals, and you can walk around large aviaries and even a night house to see captive kiwi. That’s one reason, probably the biggest reason, why we don’t have centennials for animals that become extinct in the wild. And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and Bald Eagle. Turns out, from what I could find, not particularly ceremonious. We could do it! Then the 80s happened.
