Go birding for the first time in the Dominican Republic and you might wonder if a Broad-billed Tody is a flycatcher, a really lazy hummingbird, or if some super cute stuffed animal came to life. Not so with our visit to Bosque de Apache NWR in southern New Mexico. Nearly 30,000 of these acres is set aside as dry wilderness habitat for other birds, animals and other various living creatures. The Little Big Year 2018: Best Birds of the Year!

This bird is 3 inches long, lives in the darkest part of the jungle understory of Costa Rica, and never sits still! For shear beauty and color, it would be hard to ever find a more amazing group of birds that we found in Costa Rica. We spent a total of 22 days in Costa Rica, with 15 of those days spent truly birding.

McKee Project Expands Work into Guatemala and Other Latin American Countries

At the end of 2007, the World Society for the Protection of Animals selected the McKee Project to work on spay/neuter programs in Guatemala. Although they are best known for their work in Costa Rica, they also work in Mexico and Panama. This is a great group that I've spotlighted before.

(of a plant or animal) native and restricted to a certain place. Which means that the large country of Mexico boasts (according to one list) 127 endemic bird species, while the famous birders’ destination of Costa Rica has only 6. It doesn’t seem fair at all.
