He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. In other words, the proverbial happy farm animal. Factory animals are voiceless victims.

Aside from their support of animal research, I have enountered them in my line of work and find them corporate, condescending, and self-righteous. It's not just a question of animal rights. Chickens that are used for KFC products are horribly treated. Chickens that are used for KFC products are horribly treated.

I think it is safe to say that yes, an intelligent animal is unhappy, even downright miserable, being confined to a crate two by seven feet for months on end.
