Mkuze Game Reserve is in the Eastern part of South Africa, about 5 hours away from Johannesburg, and one of the best places I have ever been to for bird photography. At some point, I almost convinced myself that it would be a good idea to publish a coffee table photo book just showing Red-billed Oxpecker on various animals.

Birding Gir National Park, India

After several game drives, once again we are at the front gate of the Gir National Park in the state of Gujarat. A low branch is decorated by a Green Bee-eater and a tree top above it holds several Cattle Egrets. After a positive ID, it flies to the protruded roots of a large tree, showing itself well in the soft sunlight.

Up on Higgins near the book store it’s just the occasional bit of fairy floss angling down across my vision. Letting cattle trample upon the riverbanks, or promoting game animals and eliminating predators until the populations of elk and deer munch the stream-sides bare, also cut back on the replacement rate of the big trees.

Chitals are crossing the road, but we have seen too many of them to stop now.

It is argued that beef cattle and hogs are protein factories in reserve. The eating of non-grain-eating animals, e.g., fish and wild game, is morally permissible on this view.
