The RSPCA are trying to raise awareness of its urgent campaign to protect the welfare of UK meat chickens. Right now, the UK government is considering new EU legislation that may increase the number of chickens allowed in rearing sheds. It’s hard to walk or even flap their wings.

It's not just a question of animal rights. Chickens that are used for KFC products are horribly treated. But, really, even if I ate meat, I wouldn't touch KFC. He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. You are not processing their wellbeing, but their carcasses for meat. Here is my opinion.

When he spends what seems like an eternity discussing cockfighting and the people who participate, mostly to set up the comparison to how the chickens we eat are treated and the lack of outrage over that, I respond, “What is wrong with you? The campaign to moralize meat has largely been a failure. You’re right, it is horrible!

The fact that geese mate for life, and that the mate of the poor goose that was slaughtered would step forward, was enough to make me swear off meat forever, if I hadn’t already.
