In " 'Animal Rights:' Pernicious Nonsense for Both Law & Public Policy ," Massachusetts attorney and "sportsman" Richard Latimer is on the mark with some concepts, and way off with others. It has absolutely nothing to do with any genuine environmentalist ethic. Now, I know you're saying: That's not what animal rights is.

The way I see it, there are three camps on this one: People who think that dolphins or Great Apes or chimps could function as a gateway to other animals getting rights. You could be for or against animal rights and believe the gateway theory. Would you actually actively campaign against rights for some species?

Here's the full article from the Los Angeles Times. An animal rights group has called for a federal investigation into the death of an elephant at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals also criticized the zoo in the wake of the death.

Yesterday I received an e-mail alert from the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) regarding " a coin operated game that uses live lobsters at the Royal Palm Ale House in Royal Palm Beach. The final sentence of the article is: " It's no different than a lobster tank in a restaurant," said Palm Beach Ale House owner Jay Starr.

Yesterday's " Do Small Victories Affect Big Picture in Animal Rights Debate? Both, of course, were seen as victories, but the article's author, Richard Foot, asks: Do such successes mean the animal rights movement is winning its long, controversial campaigns to gain the same legal protections for animals as those ascribed to humans?

But as far as the article goes, I particularly like: "a radical new vision is needed to rescue the importance of the vegan message for global crisis and situate it in its full social and ecological context.".

Bea sent me a link to an article in Gourmet called " Humane Slaughterhouses ," by Rebecca Marx, that is absurd. Interestingly, the campaigns of happy meaters are acknowledged for perhaps being somewhat of a scam with the next sentence. The animal is an "it," but I wouldn't expect anything more in this type of article.
