Animals for research purposes are coming from municipal shelters, breeders and the greyhound trade. In 2007, 394 dogs died during procedures for canine and human research. None of the animal shelters contacted by the Herald Sun have come across ex-research dogs in need of a home.

Quick work on the part of the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), in partnership with the Humane Society of the U.S. and more than a dozen animal shelters and rescues[1] succeeded in placing all of the rescued animals, offering hope that they will find loving homes and solace after their ordeal.

In a brief tour of a particular biotech research company, I was taken to the animal lab. Interesting that many of the grants this place gets specifically say they can't experiment on any domesticated animals (cats and dogs I guess.). It reminded me of an adoption poster at the animal shelter. Well, kind of.
