Whether we like to admit it or not, we (culturally) view animals on a "sentience spectrum." " We're more willing to forgive acts of animal abuse against animals like fish & amphibians, compared to mammals & birds. This is where I'd like to bring up "anthropomorphic bias."

While cruelty to animals is a serious matter that should elicit widespread public outrage, efforts to reach the public through more serious means often fall on deaf ears in a world in which sex sells and there are both a war and an economic downturn. Animal suffering and human suffering are undeniably interconnected.

Causing an animal to suffer for no good reason is cruel, and our ordinary commonsense morality tells us in no uncertain terms that cruelty is wrong.
