This species is found on the African continent, in Angola, as well as central, eastern, and southern Africa. They are the heaviest and largest living birds, with adult common ostriches weighing anywhere between 140-320 lbs and laying the largest eggs of any living land animal. Ostrich eggs have been used by humans for millennia.

African Harrier-Hawks, snakes and other predators frequently raid weaver colonies to rob the nests of eggs and chicks. It’s often considered wasteful that so many nests are abandoned and left to degenerate, but my theory of one of the reasons for this behavior is related to predation.
