Although it has a few more birds than Costa Rica (including reliable Harpy Eagles ) and some great lodges, in ecotourism terms, Panama seem to be Costa Rica’s “little brother” (there’s a hidden message to its tourism board). Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. We have several quail-dove species in Costa Rica, this one is only found in cloud forest here and in western Panama. It does range into western Panama but is far from easy there (nor in Costa Rica for that matter).

In most countries, long, sweaty, expedition birding is required to see the only curassow species in Middle America. That changes in Costa Rica, where the vulnerable Great Curassow is easily seen at several protected sites. In Costa Rica, it’s pretty common and easy to see in and near just about any protected forest.

Central America is much smaller than the land encompassed within the borders of Canada and the USA. Given such limited geographical dimensions, one might be tempted to assume that Central America is pretty much the same, that the region is fairly homogenous in a number of ways. The Rufous-collared Robin is one of those birds.

If this is Chestnut-headed Oropendola is from Panama, should I worry that it’s going to steal my camera after I digiscoped its picture? btw, I promote equality in all ways, but I don’t bend over backwards protecting any either.&# Being a white guy in America is super hard. I’ve had stuff stolen before.

Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. The experience, the place, and the bird combine to make this my BBOTY. Yes, it was an exceptionally good year.
