Agonizing quandaries concerning invasive species are well-known to wildlife biologists. Thus the decision was made to kill 3,600 Barreds, and it’s hard to fault the inescapable logic of doing so, as one Audubon Society director expressed it: On the one hand, killing thousands of owls is completely unacceptable.

As she continued her monologue about these cats, the Wildcat cautiously walked in our direction, never taking its eyes off of us, stiff-legged, ears motionless, striped like a standard “tiger” domestic cat but entirely in grays. The most interesting thing about this cat was lack of kitty-cat-ness.

For instance, assume (and I will NOT stand by this number, it is just one I’ve heard here and there) that kitty cats in America kill 50,000,000 birds a year. Hardly any Sandhill Cranes are killed by domestic (including ferrel domestic) cats. In fact, there are certainly a few cats killed by hawks every year.

… Matthew Anderson [of Audubon] said proponents of colonies are putting the interests of one invasive species — cats — over the hundreds of other native ones that are their prey. Cats are domesticated animals that are not indigenous wildlife in North America. Those who violate the ordinance can be fined $200.
