Most of the Osprey breeding in North America are migratory, only Florida, the Caribbean and Baja California host non-migratory breeders 1. Note how the male retracts his talons as he approaches the female to copulate… protecting his mate from those razor sharp claws. This pair copulated several times while I was observing.

This is a serious issue around Eilat and seems to affect local resident breeders more than migrants. In Costa Rica, it’s not so much a problem in protected areas, but acts as a barrier to habitat restoration and reforestation on private land (and yes, we do need quite a bit of reforestation in Costa Rica).

Nice. ((** all names have been changed to protect identities and have been substituted with (almost) randomly chosen substitutes suitable for a family of Alpine Accentors.)) In the case of Acorn Woodpeckers, they are cooperative breeders (as with many other polygynandrous species), which seems to predispose species to polygynandry.

Like the Adjutants in Asia and Jabiru of the Americas, the Marabou is our bare-headed scavenging stork. Sometimes they have to protect their catches from piratic African Fish Eagles who swoop down as soon as they that see a Saddle-bill has successfully caught a fish. They also prey on frogs and crabs.
